I often feel lonely around Christmas. OR I feel over crowded with too much to do or be. The busy feeling may be obvious. But the loneliness seems to creep up on me for no apparent reason. Perhaps kickstarted by a feeling that everyone else is more engaged with their family, seeing more friends, going to brighter parties, being more grateful, and basically having perfect Christmasses. It is, after all, the one time of year when almost a whole nation is doing the exact same thing at the same time, with some variation. I can easily understand why Christmas is said to be the most difficult time for people who are already feeling vulnerable for one reason or another. Perhaps you are one of them?

I do know something I can do balance these states (too busy/feeling lonely). It´s a simple thing. But can be very hard to do: To let go of my own story about it all and simply connect to the fine and quiet energy that is available this time of year. It helps to balance the busyness. And it is a true remedy against loneliness. But first I need to be still. To quieten down. To dare let go of the busyness. To acknowledge and then listen behind that lonely feeling.

Perhaps something is begging us to be here, available and present, even if it is just for a short amount of time. And if you are feeling lonely, perhaps you are more needed than you know. I think there are plenty of “Stillness jobs” available out there if we dare to take them on. Like being scouts for fresh new energy arriving to the planet right now. Who knows, you may be the first person who gets a sense of what 2014 will bring for all of us. If you manage to become still enough to hear it.

“If, as Herod, we fill our lives with things, and again with things; if we consider ourselves so unimportant that we must fill every moment of our lives with action, when will we have the time to make the long, slow journey across the desert as did the Magi? Or sit and watch the stars as did the shepherds? Or brood over the coming of the child as did Mary? For each of us, there is a desert to travel. A star to discover. And a being within ourselves to bring to life.”
